Welcome to The Home Gal Blog! This is where I share with you my first home remodeling projects, travel and just simple living here in New England. Let me firstly say I never thought the day would come in my life where the words we bought our first home, would come out of my mouth let alone have a blog about it! We have been here for roughly 6 months, pretty much all winter in New England terms. And I still can’t believe it sometimes! You see, I come from humble beginnings and never really lived in a home I was proud of having people come over to. Therefore, I have always dreamed of having a nice house of my own. But I should take a step back a little bit and explain how I (or I should say “we” my boyfriend and I) got to this point. And also our first home buying experience.
*Since this is my first post I do feel a little compelled to introduce myself and catch you up to speed.
MY QUICK BACK STORY: My name is Yolanda I am originally from north central Florida. It is pretty much the best most magical place and never thought I would ever leave or be able to. But, sometimes our lives are ruled by destiny and we don’t have much say in the matter. You see back in late 2010 I met my soulmate in the most unusual and least likely of places to meet your soulmate. After a year and half of doing the long distance relationship I decided to make the move here to be with him. Here we are six years later still together with our first home together in southern New England!
FIRST HOUSE BUYING EXPERIENCE: So more about the house buying experience. It was kind of my dream come true and my worst nightmare all wrapped up in a lovely package. It was a humbling experience on dreams vs. reality. In my mind I was dreaming of having this quintessential Colonial or New England Farmhouse. Growing up I wanted to have that old southern wrap around two story home with rocking chairs out front and Spanish moss hanging from the trees. However, our budget this time around didn’t provide us with either of those kind of a forever home so going into it we knew this was our “practice/transitional” home but we still remained very hopeful! We knew for a fact we wanted a couple of acres at least where we could have chickens and not have neighbors surrounding us. That… there was no compromise!
Expectations vs. Reality
Expectations: The house I had imagined in my head. So, we started house hunting in March of 2017 and 7 months later we were still looking and not even coming close to anything we wanted. At. All.
Everyone told us not to settle when looking for a home so after a heart to heart talk, we looked at it as more of a compromise instead. As mentioned before I believe in destiny and I think our forever home is not ready or out there for us yet. Our house we have now may be in a neighborhood and only have just under an acre of land but it is ours and we couldn’t be more grateful or excited! We plan on having the cutest and most cultural house in the neighborhood.
So to conclude…on this blog I hope to share with you my beginner level journey on the things we have planned to do for this house to make it special and give it more character and charm and not just like every other house in the neighborhood. You may also see from time to time our travels in the surrounding New England area as well as everything else in life I hold near and dear!
